How did it all begin?

With a mind, and a thought!

Well, that’s how I began this article, and I would like to show you by the end that it’s the most logical explanation for the beginning of the universe as well.

But, first things first.  Let us establish the fact that the universe indeed had a beginning.

This is now pretty much agreed upon across the scientific world thanks to the theories and discoveries of such eminent scientists as Albert Einstein, and Edwin Hubble.

The evidence of red-shift proves the universe is expanding from a point of singularity in the past.  The time frame for this is not important to this discussion.

Having established the fact that the universe began to exist, philosophers would then set before us a second premise: ‘all things that begin to exist are caused’.

The proof of this is all around us in nature.  Objects do not spontaneously begin to exist.  We live in an ordered universe governed by physical laws.

Yes, it is possible for objects to begin to exist without a mind being directly involved, but it is only possible if events have already been set in motion by the mind.  In other words, the material must already be there, and the process will progress naturally according to the set parameters or given directions.

Therefore, on the basis of these two premises being proven correct, namely:

  1. The universe has begun to exist.
  2. Things that begin to exist are caused.

We can say with certainty that therefore, the universe was caused to exist.

What was the cause?

We are now moving beyond the realm of time and space, into that which is eternal and immaterial.

The first fact that must be established is that science has no ability or authority to help us now.  We are beyond science.

The second point to make is that the cause, as we have already seen, must have a mind.

We turn to the Bible, which claims to be a revelation of God’s heart and thoughts.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9)

Claims are one thing, but what about proof?  We find the proof in the life of Jesus Christ, in that it is often said “he knew their thoughts”, and that his heart was often moved, with compassion, to perform miracle after miracle, creating and re-creating.

Having established in the life of Christ the truth of this revelation from and about God, we can have confidence in these words that show the God of the Bible to indeed be beyond time and space.

“Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:17)

How did it all begin?  With the Lord God Almighty.
